Celebrating Employee Ownership Month
In an effort to make learning about ESOPs enjoyable, the committee recently organized a trivia event designed to foster knowledge retention among employee owners. The event kicked off with delicious donuts and divided participants into teams for a spirited trivia competition. With categories ranging from terminology to distributions, the atmosphere was filled with laughter and camaraderie. At the end of the event, three winning teams walked away with exciting prizes, celebrating both knowledge and teamwork.
BLOOMINGTON, MN – October 2024 - October marks a significant occasion in the world of employee ownership as it is recognized
as ESOP Month. But what exactly does ESOP mean? An acronym for Employee Stock Ownership Plan, ESOPs allow employees to acquire shares in the company they work for, promoting a culture of ownership and investment in the organization's success.
The journey to becoming an ESOP has deep roots for our company, which began in 1965 when founders Dick Hunt, Ron Harris, and Shelly Stewart established Hunt Electric, a small electrical services firm. After decades of growth and development, the company transitioned to an ESOP model around its 50th anniversary. By 2021, we proudly became 100% employee-owned.
This ownership model offers notable benefits. Research shows that ESOP companies are 1.4 times more likely to provide employer-sponsored training, enhancing employee skills and productivity while demonstrating a commitment to professional development.
Eligible participants aged 55 and older can withdraw a portion of their account's value, allowing them to diversify their investments—up to 25% in the first five years and up to 50% in the sixth year.
To further engage our employee owners, we established an Employee Owner Committee composed of seven dedicated individuals. This team works tirelessly to educate staff on the nuances of ESOPs, covering topics from eligibility to stock valuation and the implications of acquisitions.
