St. Paul District Energy Holding Tank Lighting
St. Paul District Energy Holding Tank Lighting | Rope Access LED Upgrade
Project Overview: Upgrading The Facade Lighting To A Modern LED System
The St. Paul District Energy Holding Tank Lighting project focused on restoring the visual impact and functionality of the facility’s decorative facade lighting. Over time, much of the existing lighting system had burned out, diminishing both aesthetics and nighttime visibility.
Hunt Electric upgraded the facade lighting to a modern LED system, delivering improved reliability, efficiency, and appearance. Due to challenging site conditions and access limitations, the project was executed using Hunt Electric’s Industrial Rope Access team.

Restoring Lighting Aesthetics Through Rope Access
The holding tank presented significant access challenges, including permanent infrastructure placement, fencing, nearby tree cover, required road impairments, and limited building accessibility due to adjacent structures.
Rather than relying on traditional access methods, Hunt Electric utilized Industrial Rope Access to reach all sides of the tank. This approach allowed the team to complete the work safely and efficiently without disrupting traffic, damaging surrounding trees, or installing scaffolding or swing stages over nearby structures.
Scope of Work
Hunt Electric’s scope included the complete removal and replacement of the decorative facade lighting system, with services that included:
- Removal of existing burned out decorative lighting components
- Installation of a new LED lighting system
- Industrial Rope Access for all exterior work
- Coordination to avoid traffic disruption and site damage
Key Features
Industrial Rope Access Execution
Rope Access was critical to overcoming the site’s logistical constraints while maintaining safety and efficiency.
Key aspects included:
- Accessing all sides of the holding tank without road closures or traffic impacts
- Eliminating the need for scaffolding, lifts, or swing stages
- Protecting surrounding trees and permanent infrastructure
- Maintaining safe working conditions at heights up to 90 feet
Complex Fixture Removal and LED Upgrade
The lighting upgrade involved the removal of large, heavy components before installing the new LED system.
Key details included:
- Removing stainless steel fixture covers measuring 6 to 12 feet in length
- Handling fixtures weighing up to 200 pounds
- Performing all work safely at significant heights
- Installing new LED lighting components to restore facade aesthetics
Saving Time and Money
Traditional access methods would have significantly increased both project duration and cost.
Project efficiencies included:
- Completing the work over five days
- Avoiding a timeline that would have tripled using scaffolding or lifts
- Eliminating the need for additional contractors and equipment rentals
- Reducing overall project cost while maintaining safety standards
