St Luke’s Hospital Expansion – Building A

The 82,000-square-foot, two-story vertical expansion of St. Luke’s Building A advances healthcare capacity in Downtown Duluth by adding new cardiac and intensive care resources. The expansion includes 60 new private cardiac and ICU rooms, along with a new rooftop helipad to support emergency medical transport and critical patient response.

As a major addition to an active urban medical campus, this project strengthens the hospital’s ability to deliver high-acuity care while improving patient flow, transportation access, and clinical infrastructure.

Situated in Downtown Duluth, the project required meticulous planning for material deliveries and equipment movement. Dense urban surroundings, active hospital operations, and limited staging areas demanded continuous coordination among the project team.

Helipad & FAA Lighting Requirements

The rooftop helipad installation introduced strict safety and compliance requirements. FAA-mandated lighting had to be incorporated into the stair and elevator tower rough-tops along the perimeter. This added unique installation challenges due to height, access, and the need to maintain safe work conditions throughout construction.

Hunt Electric delivered a comprehensive electrical and low-voltage rough-in package for the Building A expansion. Our work included:

• Installation of new 5 kV switchgear serving the expanded facility
• Lighting fixtures and integrated lighting control systems
• Rough-in for new low-voltage systems supporting clinical operations
• Electrical support for the rooftop helipad and associated safety systems
