MSP Airport Perimeter Gate Security Improvements

2026 Perimeter Gate Security Improvements & GSE Maintenance Facility | Airport Security and Electrical Infrastructure

Expanding Secure Airfield Access and Building a 30,000 Square Foot Maintenance Facility at MSP Airport

Hunt Electric is supporting the 2026 Perimeter Gate Security Improvements & GSE Maintenance Facility project at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, 4300 Glumack Drive in St. Paul, Minnesota. The work combines two major project phases involving secure airfield access and new airport maintenance infrastructure.

The first phase modifies an existing gate connecting non-secure landside areas with the SIDA secure side of the airfield. The existing one-inbound, one-outbound configuration will expand to four total lanes, including conversion of the current outbound lane to inbound and construction of new inbound and outbound lanes to address traffic flow. The second phase includes construction of an approximately 30,000-square-foot airport operators’ maintenance facility from the ground up.

Maintaining Secure Airfield Access Through a 15-Month Construction Project

Airport security improvements require careful coordination when the infrastructure being modified must remain operational. A defining requirement of this MSP Airport project is keeping the secure access gate open throughout construction while Hunt’s work is coordinated with the general contractor and other trades.

The anticipated 15-month project schedule adds another layer to planning and sequencing. Hunt is working with Donlar Construction for the first time on this project, creating a new project-team relationship while coordinating electrical and security-related work around ongoing secure access requirements.

Clear communication, critical thinking, and coordination between scopes are central to moving the project forward while accounting for changing construction conditions and the operational needs of the airport environment.

Scope of Work

Hunt Electric’s project scope includes:

  • Gate systems and operators
  • SAACS integration
  • Surveillance systems
  • Duct bank installation
  • Directional boring
  • Lighting controls
  • Secure-side air-blown fiber
  • Electrical and security infrastructure associated with the gate improvements and maintenance facility

Key Features

Four-Lane Secure Access Gate Expansion

The existing secure access point is being expanded to improve movement between the landside and SIDA secure portions of MSP Airport.

Key project elements include:

  • Expansion from two existing lanes to four total lanes
  • Conversion of the existing outbound lane to inbound traffic
  • Addition of a new inbound lane
  • Addition of a new outbound lane
  • Continuous secure access during construction

New 30,000 Square Foot Airport Maintenance Facility

The second project phase adds new operational infrastructure through construction of an approximately 30,000-square-foot airport operators’ maintenance facility.

The ground-up facility construction makes this more than a gate modification project. Hunt’s work must support both the existing secure-access environment and new airport maintenance infrastructure within the same overall project.

Integrated Airport Security Infrastructure

The project combines multiple systems required around a controlled airport access point.

Hunt’s scope includes:

  • Secure gate operators
  • SAACS integration
  • Surveillance
  • Lighting controls
  • Secure-side fiber infrastructure
  • Supporting underground infrastructure

This mix of systems requires electrical and security work to be coordinated around both physical access and airport security requirements.

Construction Around an Active Secure Gate

Keeping the secure gate operational is one of the project’s defining execution requirements. Work must be planned around continued movement between non-secure landside areas and the SIDA secure side while new lanes and infrastructure are constructed.

The project also requires coordination across trades over a 15-month schedule, making sequencing and communication important throughout construction.

Why Hunt Electric

The MSP Airport Perimeter Gate Security Improvements project brings together the kind of conditions that require electrical construction to be closely coordinated with security infrastructure, underground work, controls, communications systems, construction sequencing, and an active operating environment.

Hunt’s role spans gate systems, surveillance, SAACS integration, duct banks, directional boring, lighting controls, and secure-side fiber. That range allows the project team to coordinate multiple connected systems while working around the requirement to maintain secure airfield access during construction.

For owners and project teams managing active facilities, that coordination matters. The work must fit the construction schedule while also accounting for the operational systems and access requirements already in place.

Supporting Secure and Operational Airport Infrastructure

From controlled access points to new maintenance facilities, airport electrical projects often require multiple systems to work together while existing operations continue around the construction.

Hunt Electric supports complex electrical and infrastructure projects that require careful coordination across security, controls, communications, underground systems, and field construction.
