Powering the Future: Inside the Fraser Shipyard Project for the Beausoleil Tribe’s New Ferry

Fraser Shipyard is building a new ferry for the Beausoleil First Nation in Canada, and we were brought on to handle the vessel’s wiring. This ferry is powered by five onboard 325KW generators, with a 116KW emergency generator for backup. Its propulsion system is fully electric, driven by two 576KW motors that turn Voith propellers, making it efficient and reliable.

Our team wired critical systems, including fire alarms, alarm monitoring, navigation, UPS, and boiler controls. In total, we pulled, terminated, and commissioned 1,700 cables to ensure the vessel’s systems were fully operational and ready for service.

Challenges and Solutions

Marine wiring comes with its own set of challenges. The work had to meet strict marine standards, with inspections conducted by Lloyd’s Register of North America. Additionally, all wiring methods required approval from Transport Canada.

Limited space, unique cable specifications, and a completely different set of regulations compared to commercial or industrial wiring added complexity to the project. Our team worked within these constraints to deliver a fully compliant and functional system.

The Beausoleil Tribe’s new ferry is now equipped with reliable, efficient systems that meet all regulatory standards. We’re proud to have contributed to this important project, ensuring the vessel is ready for its role in serving the community.
