In this episode of Beyond the Breaker, we welcome Nathan Heitmann, a project executive at Hunt Electric, to discuss the intricacies of building hyperscale data centers. With years of experience in the field, Nathan shares his journey from the military to becoming a leader in the construction industry.
Military Precision and Construction Leadership
After serving in the army and seeking direction, Nathan found his calling in the trades, leveraging his military experience in planning and teamwork to excel in project management. “In the military, they’re big on backwards planning,” Nathan explains, a skill he applies daily in his role at Hunt Electric. Nathan emphasizes the importance of trust among team members and partnerships in tackling massive data center projects. “We are transparent, we are open, we’re honest,” he said. These projects often require blending teams from different regions, each with unique approaches and backgrounds, to form a cohesive unit.
Embracing Growth
The conversation touches on the logistical challenges of managing large-scale sites, from coordinating hundreds of workers to ensuring efficient material handling. “Our biggest obstacle is volume,” Nathan notes. For successful outcomes, he stresses the importance of delegation and trust in leadership and team development. “The number one thing we have to do to grow our team is to let go,” he advises, encouraging leaders to empower their teams and foster a culture of continuous improvement. He delves into the evolving nature of the construction industry, where new roles and opportunities are constantly emerging.
